The current BMW M5 sedan and Touring models drew heavy fire when they launched in 2024 for being way too heavy, with the wagon tipping the scales at an eye-popping 5,530 lbs (2,475 kg). As it turns out, they hide the weight well, and an updated version could put a tad more performance on the table.
Just like the rest of BMW’s range, the M5 Touring, as well as the sedan and the rest of the 5-Series family, is stepping into the Neue Klasse era. Given that the current-generation M5 is still relatively fresh, it won’t be completely re-invented and overhauled, but rather get a facelift that includes minor exterior tweaks and significant interior changes.

Recently filmed lapping Germany’s Nurburgring by CarSpyMedia, the new M5 Touring looks and sounds seriously quick, even if it weighs about as much as a small luxury yacht.
What Changes Have Been Made?
Several obvious changes have been made to the car’s front end, including redesigned headlights that are similar in shape to other Neue Klasse models. The kidney grilles have changed too, and mercifully, they’re noticeably slimmer. BMW has done a good job disguising the reworked rear, but new taillights are expected, possibly paired with a fresh diffuser.
At best, the powertrain could see some light tweaks aimed at freeing up a little more power or efficiency, but nobody should count on this M car shedding any real weight in the refresh. In its current form, the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged plug-in hybrid V8 produces 717 hp and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque. It was never the sweetest-singing V8, and it isn’t about to become one. Blame strict emissions and noise rules for keeping it so muffled.
Spy shots we published earlier this year revealed that while the exterior changes will be relatively minimal, the M5’s interior will be overhauled. As such, it will include the same Panoramic iDrive system as the new iX3, i3, and X5 family, joined by an angled central infotainment display. The M5 will also get BMW’s latest two-spoke steering wheel with large control pads on either side.
