• Hardcore VW Golf R prototype has been spied undergoing testing on the Nürburgring.
  • Ventilated hood, larger radiator, and revised bumper hint at serious cooling improvements.
  • Model rumored to produce 345 hp, marking a 16 hp increase over the standard version.

Volkswagen is no stranger to special edition Golf Rs as we’ve seen multiple versions over the past few years. The Golf R 20th Anniversary Edition arrived in 2022, while the Golf R 333 followed in 2023.

It appears another special edition is in the works as spy photographers snapped a hardcore prototype undergoing testing on the Nürburgring. The mysterious model was being driven by racer and Volkswagen test driver Benny Leuchter, and it immediately stands out thanks to a ventilated hood.

A closer inspection also reveals a lightly modified front bumper and what appears to be a larger radiator. Between this and the vents, it looks like Volkswagen is putting a lot of emphasis on cooling.

The rest of the car appears pretty familiar as there are lightweight wheels backed up by a high-performance braking system with R-branded calipers. We can also see a four-tailpipe exhaust system and a black rear spoiler.

While the changes appear minor, there could be additional upgrades hidden beneath the skin. In fact, the spy photographer suggested this prototype could break the 345 hp (257 kW / 350 PS) mark and be called the Golf R 350. Although, we’ve also heard about a Golf R Clubsport.

Name aside, the current Euro-spec model has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine developing 329 hp (245 kW / 333 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel drive system, which enables the model to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
