• Toyota has begun work on the next-generation Harrier.
  • The model could be transformed into a crossover coupe.
  • It’s expected to arrive in 2027 with hybrid and PHEV options.

The Toyota Harrier might not ring a bell, but you’ve undoubtedly heard of the Venza. The crossover also has a close relationship to a number of Lexus models, so it’s interesting that spy photographers recently snapped a next-generation mule.

Expected to arrive in 2027, the fifth-generation Harrier promises to be larger and more luxurious than its predecessor. There’s even the suggestion it could transition into a crossover coupe and return to America, presumably as the Venza.

This is an interesting idea as it would help distance the model from the RAV4 and Crown Signia. Being a crossover coupe would also reinforce its premium positioning.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to see at this point other than some camouflage and wacky door handles. Needless to say, the production model will look nothing like this.

Details are few and far between, but the redesigned crossover is expected to ride on the familiar TNGA-K platform and feature a wheelbase that has been stretched by 2.4 inches (60 mm). This would give the model 108.3 inches (2,750 mm) between the wheels and that’s 3.9 inches (99 mm) less than the Crown Signia.

Length is expected to climb to 187.4 inches (4,760 mm), while width grows slightly by 0.2 inches (5 mm). More notably, the model could be 4.3 inches (110 mm) lower than its predecessor.

We’re taking those numbers with a grain of salt, but the Harrier’s cabin could take a few cues from the RAV4. This means we can expect an upgraded Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system with a more smartphone-like interface. The 12.9-inch display should also offer customizable widgets as well as improved response times.

This Bland Mule Could Be Hiding Toyota’s Hot Crossover Coupe

While the display should carryover, the rest of the cabin will be far more upscale. This is hardly surprising as the previous Venza felt more like a Lexus than a Toyota.

Powertrain details are also murky, but a rumor suggests the model could use a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It’s expected to be paired with hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems to deliver performance and efficiency.
