- Mercedes-AMG is working on a new CLA Shooting Brake EQ.
- Model could have tri-motor powertrain with more than 500 hp.
- Wagon largely flies under the radar as it has subtle styling changes.
Mercedes introduced the CLA Shooting Brake with EQ Technology last summer and they’ve apparently decided that name wasn’t long enough. As a result, they’re adding three more letters in the form of AMG.
Spied undergoing testing on the Nürburgring, the high-performance wagon echoes the existing AMG Line variant and features a sporty front bumper as well as star-infused headlights. The camouflage hides a number of details, but it appears the model has two prominent outer intakes that are covered by black and white disguise.

Further back, we can see aggressive side skirts and lightweight wheels that are backed up by a high-performance braking system. More notably, the electric estate has active aerodynamics in the form of a deployable rear wing that is built into the liftgate-mounted spoiler. We also wouldn’t be surprised to find a sportier rear bumper to help the model stand out from its more mainstream counterparts.
Spy photographers didn’t get a look inside, but we can expect to find a familiar cabin with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment system. The model should also be offered with an optional MBUX Superscreen that adds a 14-inch front passenger display into the mix.
We can also expect a handful of special touches including a sport steering wheel, performance seats, and stainless steel pedals. They’ll presumably be joined by new trim and plenty of AMG badging.

Powertrain details are more mysterious, but previous reports have suggested the car could have three axial flux motors that produce more than 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS). They could be joined by a unique battery that has a higher energy density than the regular model.
That’s not a lot to go on, but the existing CLA 350 4MATIC Shooting Brake with EQ Technology has an 85 kWh battery pack that feeds a dual-motor all-wheel drive system developing a combined output of 349 hp (260 kW / 354 PS) and 380 lb-ft (515 Nm) of torque. This enables the wagon to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in five seconds flat, before topping out at 130 mph (210 km/h).
The CLA 350 has a WLTP range of 454 miles (730 km). When the battery is low, a 320 kW DC fast charger can deliver approximately 186 miles (300 km) of range in as little as ten minutes.
