Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed the government’s stance on rationalising the RON95 fuel subsidy, asserting its importance for the country’s well-being.

The Finance Minister also addressed concerns that a RON95 price hike is unwarranted, emphasising that the majority of Malaysians will not be significantly impacted.

Moreover, Anwar added that the implementation of the subsidy would ensure enough resources to address the poor, increase the quality of education and provide better public services, especially in healthcare.

“There are a lot of negative campaigns about RON95 (fuel subsidy rationalisation)… and I would like to reiterate that there’s no issue of the RON95 increase affecting 85 to 90 per cent of our people.

“So that must be made very clear.

“Whatever the opposition says is just a gimmick, a desperate attempt to portray the people as suffering, to fuel more negative narratives,” he said as quoted from NST Online.

Before this, there was a statement from the Petroleum Dealers Association Malaysia President Khairul Annuar Abdul Aziz , urging the government to hold the implementation of the RON 95 subsidy until two critical issues are resolved.

He said, one of the issues involves the Automatic Pricing Mechanism, which no longer reflects current operating costs, having remained unchanged since 2019 and the Merchant Discount Rate.

Furthermore, Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan had said the rationalisation of the RON 95 subsidy would be implemented in the second half of this year.
