• Our spy photographers spotted two Skoda Fabia prototypes on the track.
  • One featured sharper aero bits and the other came fitted with red calipers.
  • Skoda is likely working on a facelifted Fabia, with hopes for a hotter variant.

The current generation of the Skoda Fabia never got an RS version to join the mechanically-related VW Polo GTI. However, a pair of prototypes spotted doing hot laps at the Nurburgring suggest that the Czech company might be working on something special.

At first glance, the prototypes looks like regular Fabias in a plain white shade, but a closer inspection reveals a few interesting bits. One of them is fitted with a front splitter and a new rear spoiler extension, both finished in black.

The other prototype doesn’t have any fancy aero, but features red brake calipers on the rear axle. This is noteworthy because the Fabia doesn’t currently offer the option of red calipers. Both models appear to ride on 18-inch alloy wheels with a five-spoke design, which are optionally available on the existing Monte Carlo trim.

A Facelift Could Arrive Soon

The fourth generation of the Czech supermini was introduced in 2021, so the time is near for a mid-lifecycle update. This means that the pictured models could be development prototypes for the facelifted Fabia that could arrive as early as next year, hopefully together with a sportier version.

Chances are that the final product will feature revised bumpers and lighting units, freshening up the styling of the Czech model. The redesigned bits could be fitted in future prototypes, likely hiding under camouflage wrap.

In the current Fabia lineup, the most potent turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine generates 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS). The Monte Carlo trim is the one with the sportiest looks thanks to subtle black accents and different wheels, along with a nicer interior.

The most powerful version of the subcompact hatchback is the Fabia Rally2 that was introduced last year with a limited production of 100 units for the Spanish market. This came fitted with an ABT-tuned 1.5 TSI engine producing 188 hp (140 kW / 190 PS). It also had a lowered suspension, unique 17-inch OZ Racing wheels, subtle aero bits, and a Mamba Green shade that is usually reserved for RS models.

The Fabia never got the larger 2.0 TSI engine which is good for 204 hp (152 kW / 207 PS) in the VW Polo GTI Edition 25.

Hopefully, the facelifted range will included a performance-focused version with increased power, a sharper chassis setup, and more visual drama, making it worthy of the vRS / RS emblem. Still, with the subcompact ICE-powered hot hatch segment slowly dying, the automaker could instead opt for a warm hatch version and leave the RS thrills for its ultra-powerful EVs.
