• The China-only Tavendor by FAW VW is getting a subtle yet meaningful mid-cycle update.
  • Facelift brings revised styling elements and a stronger turbo 2.0-liter engine with 270 hp.
  • This SUV continues to slot between the Tayron and Talagon in Volkswagen’s local lineup.

Keeping track of Volkswagen’s expanding SUV lineup is no easy task, particularly with all the region-specific models such as China-exclusives. Among them is the full-size Tavendor, which, three years after its original debut, is now receiving a mid-cycle refresh.

The updated 2026 Tavendor was quietly revealed through a listing on China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology website, offering a first look at the styling changes and a revised powertrain lineup. The SUV is built by FAW-Volkswagen and is offered alongside the slightly larger Talagon in the company’s Chinese range.

VW designers didn’t go easy on the Tavendor; however, the end result now looks more like a product of the rival Stellantis group. The chrome-infused shut line of the hood is reminiscent of the previous Peugeot 3008, while the grille with the protruding emblem bears a slight resemblance to the new Citroen C5 Aircross.

The exterior updates give the Tavendor a sharper presence, though the overall design now leans closer to something you might expect from the Stellantis group. The chrome trim running across the hood’s shut line echoes the styling of the previous-generation Peugeot 3008, while the grille’s new shape, complete with a protruding emblem, brings to mind elements from the latest Citroen C5 Aircross.

Up front, the lower section of the grille has been removed, replaced by vertical air inlets integrated into the bumper. The headlight units retain their shape but receive updated internals that lend them a more modern appearance. In profile, the design remains unchanged, but the rear gets subtle updates with new graphics for the full-width LED taillights. The exhaust outlets are now hidden from view for a cleaner look.

Sportier R Line Adds Visual Interest

The R Line version of the Tavendor introduces sportier design elements. These include a more aggressive lower intake with a honeycomb mesh, unique alloy wheels, and a body-colored rear bumper insert. It also carries over features from the outgoing model such as roof rails and a contrasting roof option.

As with most SUVs from the VW Group, the Tavendor rides on the MQB Evo architecture. The facelifted version model now measures 5,007 mm (197.1 inches) in length, which is 50 mm longer than the outgoing version. Its wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,980 mm (117.3 inches), and all other dimensions are carried over.

Powertrain Gains More Muscle

Perhaps the most interesting news is that the flagship Tavendor 450 TSI is fitted with an upgraded turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 270 hp (200 kW / 272 PS). This is 50 hp (37 kW) more compared to its predecessor, promising better performance. Also returning is the 380 TSI model, powered by a different 2.0-liter turbo unit producing 211 hp (157 kW / 214 PS).

The 2026 Tavendor will be available exclusively in China, with production handled by FAW-Volkswagen. As before, there are no plans to export it to international markets.
