• A camouflaged prototype of the Hyundai i20 was caught during development testing.
  • The hatchback could enter a new generation in 2027, adopting a new design language.
  • The next i20 is expected to be ICE-powered, albeit with a heavier dose of electrification.

Hyundai doesn’t plan on abandoning the small hatchback segment, and the i20 is getting another generation. Our spy photographers have caught the first prototype during hot weather testing in Europe, confirming it will retain a combustion engine under the hood.

The fresh spy shots from Spain suggest that the i20 will be completely redesigned, unlike the larger i30 which is about to receive its third consecutive facelift. This will allow designers to infuse Hyundai’s latest styling language to the subcompact hatchback, giving it a boxier stance compared to its predecessor.

A new pair of LED headlights appears to be mounted lower, flanking a smaller grille. The profile appears to swap the complex character lines of the current i20 for a cleaner look. The design of the greenhouse is also new, with flatter pillars and a raising beltline towards the back sending crossover vibes.

The rear end is covered in heavy camouflage but we can see hints of redesigned taillights and a provisional exhaust pipe sticking out of the bumper. This is proof that the model won’t go electric, although there are rumors about a zero-emission sibling with similar design based on a different platform.

Big changes are also expected inside the cabin, with an overhauled design for the dashboard, a more modern digital cockpit, and new materials borrowed from Hyundai’s EV lineup.

We don’t have information about the underpinnings of the new i20 but chances are it will ride on an upgraded version of the existing platform. In terms of powertrains, Hyundai already offers a mild-hybrid option, but the new model is expected to step up the electrification game as the Euro 7 emission regulations make life harder for engineers.

As for the i20 N hot hatch with the turbo 1.6-liter engine, it was dropped from the European lineup last year due to emissions. However, there is a chance it will return further into the future, most likely with a hybrid setup.

Market Launch And Rivals

The current i20 was introduced in 2020 and received a mild facelift in 2023. The next generation is expected to appear in mid 2026, with a market launch more likely for 2027.

Rivals of the next Hyundai i20 will include the Renault Clio which is about to enter a new generation lather this year. It will also compete with the Citroen C3, Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa, and Lancia Ypsilon quadruplets from Stellantis, the VW Polo, Skoda Fabia, and Seat Ibiza triplets from VW Group, the MG 3 from China and the Toyota Yaris from Japan.
